45% improvement in reliability, says report
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) provided the most reliable electric service in company history in 2023.
Over the past two decades, FPL customers have realized a remarkable 45% improvement in reliability.
An annual report filed last week with the Florida Public Service Commission details how FPL delivered the best-ever performance with key industry metrics, including the average amount of time an FPL customer experienced an outage; the average number of interruptions experienced by a customer; and, the average number of momentary interruptions or flickers.
FPL’s best-ever reliability is a result of the utility’s smart investments and continuous efforts to improve the energy grid, benefiting its approximately 6 million customers.
“FPL is committed to delivering exceptionally reliable service to our customers while keeping bills as low as possible,” said FPL President and CEO Armando Pimentel.
“Of course, we live in a state with increasingly severe weather and a year-round growing cycle, so reliability is both top of mind and always a challenge. And, that’s what makes our reliability story even more remarkable – we’re striking the balance between performance and cost. Our smart investments and ongoing efforts to strengthen the grid are making a real difference for our customers.”
FPL’s efforts to harden its energy grid include:
– Placing nearly 2,000 neighborhood power lines underground since the inception of the Storm Secure Underground Program in 2018.
– Installing more than 215,000 intelligent devices along the grid. This smart grid technology detects and prevents power outages and minimizes restoration times when outages do occur. The technology has helped avoid more than 13 million outages since 2011.
– Inspecting power poles and replacing those that no longer meet industry-leading standards.
For perspective, this is the ninth time in the past 10 years that FPL achieved its best-ever reliability rating. The company consistently ranks among the most reliable utilities in the nation. In the most recent statistics from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, FPL’s service reliability was nearly three times better than the national average.
