BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field. We caught up with Panther men’s basketball player Isaiah Edden, a junior who is majoring in Business, for this edition of Scholar-Athlete Spotlight.

A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Isaiah transferred to Florida Tech from Southern Union State Community College in Alabama.

Isaiah joined us to talk about why he chose Florida Tech and how his education is preparing him for his career.

Tell us a little bit about your major, what made you choose it and what do you want to do with it?

I major in business and my father is a GC, he has his own company. So I thought business would be the right step to go.

What was it about Florida Tech that made you want to be here?

The coaching staff, obviously being a lot closer to home. I was in JUCO in Alabama, and I’m from West Palm, so Melbourne is a lot closer than Alabama and the overall culture. I really enjoyed my visit here and I thought it would be the right choice for me.

Having just wrapped up your first semester at Florida Tech, what have you enjoyed so far in the classroom? Have you had any eye-opening experiences?

There are a lot of different people from different countries and different perspectives, and the teachers are awesome.

What’s something you’ve learned about your major at Florida Tech that you didn’t know before?

Yes and no. Being a junior and a transfer, I’m taking a lot of intro classes and stuff like that that I know the majority of but just learning how to become an entrepreneur because I wanna follow my dad’s footsteps.

How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for what you’re doing now and what lessons have you taken from the court that apply to your studies?

Basketball has taught me about discipline, getting up, practicing and, training, and working with others, things of that nature.

What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech that has an interest in Business?

Hard work, it’s a lot coming to Florida Tech, managing your time between school and basketball. You have to be very disciplined and know what you want to do and go after it.

What’s something you’ve done in the classroom that you’re most proud of?

A couple of things. First, I got good grades, I got A’s and B’s that I’m proud of. The second thing in one of my business classes, we had to do a presentation for other business owners and I thought I did a good job on that.
