BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – MedFast Urgent Care Director of Billing Marilyn Stevens, a driving force in the health care company’s impressive expansion to 18 locations, passed away Sunday, March 3, at age 70 after a battle with breast cancer.

Dr. David Williams, MedFast’s founder, said Stevens’ contributions were foundational to the growth of MedFast from its inception in Melbourne in 2006 to its current network of 18 clinics.

MedFast Urgent Care, which holds the distinction of being the area’s largest and most comprehensive provider of urgent care services, also reaches beyond urgent care with a network of community support that helps to ensure the health of Space Coast residents young and old.

“Her negotiation skills with insurance companies not only secured MedFast’s place as a viable healthcare option but also ensured that urgent care remained an affordable alternative to emergency room visits for many,” said Dr. Williams, who founded this network of care in 2007 and is the practice’s president and chief medical officer.

“As the director of billing, Marilyn was renowned for her patient-first approach, often seen working tirelessly, even amidst her own health battles, to ensure that no patient was turned away due to financial constraints. Her dedication shone brightly during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where she continued to put the needs of patients first.”

Williams said Stevens was not just the heart of the organization but also a beacon of hope and care for those in need.

“Her ability to negotiate at the front desk, sometimes even offering free care, marked her as a truly remarkable individual in the healthcare industry,” said Williams.

Family, friends and colleagues remember Stevens as a selfless, passionate, and tireless worker, whose kindness was felt by all who knew her. Her soft-spoken and welcoming nature extended beyond the walls of MedFast, touching the lives of her family and neighbors, especially through her love of cooking and hosting gatherings during the holidays.

Her son, Robert Riddell, remembered the wonderful holiday dinners she would prepare, emphasizing her joy in bringing people together and her constant endeavor to put others first, traits that defined her both personally and professionally.

Stevens’ legacy extends far beyond the immediate impact of her work at MedFast.

“Marilyn’s approach to healthcare, focusing on accessibility and compassion, serves as a model for how healthcare providers can bridge the gap between medical services and community needs,” said Williams.

“Her life’s work underscores the importance of patient-first healthcare, a principle that continues to guide MedFast and inspire those within the healthcare community.”
