Melbourne Man Arrested for Two Counts of Vehicular Homicide, DUI Manslaughter

A 30-year-old Melbourne man has been arrested for the the death of two pedestrians on October 18 between New Haven Avenue and Melbourne Avenue East in Melbourne.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A 30-year-old Melbourne man has been arrested for the the death of two pedestrians on October 18 between New Haven Avenue and Melbourne Avenue East in Melbourne.

Authorities say the crash happened on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at approximately 7:14 pm, when Melbourne police officers responded to the area of Front Street between New Haven Avenue and Melbourne Avenue East regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a Ford pickup truck and two pedestrians.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that both of the pedestrians had life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

Both pedestrians were transported to an area hospital for treatment, where they both later succumbed to the injuries they sustained due to the crash.

The initial investigation reveals that the Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound on Front Street after traveling eastbound on Melbourne Avenue East. The pedestrians were walking southbound on the sidewalk along the east side of Front Street.

The vehicle’s operator lost control and left the roadway to the right, striking a curb and driving onto the sidewalk.

As he crossed over the sidewalk, he struck both pedestrians.

During the course of this investigation, Officers with the Melbourne Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit found probable cause that the driver involved in this crash was operating the motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit and with cannabis present in his blood.

Officers also determined that the driver operated his vehicle recklessly and with a suspended driver’s license, resulting in the death of the two pedestrians involved in the crash.

He also carried no insurance on the vehicle being driven in the crash.

On August 16, 2023, Officers with the Melbourne Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit secured a warrant for the arrest of Robert Lueck for the charges of two counts of DUI Manslaughter (No bond), two counts of Vehicular Homicide (No bond), Driving with a suspended license resulting in death (No bond), Driving under the influence resulting in property damage or personal injury, Driving under the influence, and Failure to maintain financial responsibility.

Robert Lueck was taken into custody on August 17, 2023, in Satellite Beach and turned over to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on NO BOND status until a first appearance hearing.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating this crash as a Traffic Homicide Investigation.
