Benefits the Central Brevard Sharing Center’s 'Children’s Weekend Feeding Program'

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – If you have never been to the Amateur Backyard BBQ Contest, hosted by the Central Brevard Sharing Center, you owe it to yourself to go to F. Burton Smith Park, 7575 W. King Street, in Cocoa, on Saturday, April 6. The event opens to the public at 11 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m.
A $20 admission ticket will allow you to enter the park, and get you samples from the chefs, plus a BBQ lunch/dinner. There will be raffles, a 50/50 drawing, live music by Classic Jurassic, and much more.
Proceeds from the BBQ Contest will benefit the Central Brevard Sharing Center’s “Children’s Weekend Feeding Program.”
My broadcasting/business partner, Orville Susong recently had a chance to talk with the President and CEO of the Central Brevard Sharing Center, David Brubaker. You could see and hear in his voice how excited he is about the Contest. Brubaker told Susong that after the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. on Friday, the teams “are sent out to their sites to start creating the miracle of BBQ that they do!” Beef brisket, pork butt and chicken are the three categories that will be judged by the official judges and the public.
Cooking will take place overnight. The public will be allowed to enter the park at 11 a.m. on Saturday. After that, it’s time to eat!

Steve Wilson was born in DeRidder, Louisiana and grew up in both New Orleans and Macon, Georgia. He moved to Brevard County in 1984 and retired from local government as the Community Advocate/Assistant to the City Manager with the City of Rockledge in 2018.

Wilson is especially proud of his chairing two fundraisers in support of pediatric cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in honor of Merritt Island resident Julie Spurlock that raised over $25,000.00.
He has been a partner, along with Orville Susong, for the past 24 years with the Friday Night Locker Room, a broadcasting team that covers and reports on a wide variety of local events that are of significance to the residents of the Space Coast and beyond. Their mission is to promote youth sports, support first responders and law enforcement personnel, and showcase community and charitable events that are produced by our nonprofit partners in central Florida.
The Friday Night Locker Room has awarded hundreds of sports achievement plaques to Brevard County student-athletes over the years. They have also awarded more than $18,000 in academic scholarships to Brevard County high school seniors.
