BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, FLORIDA – It’s flu shot season and 920th Aeromedical Staging Squadron Airmen have the influenza vaccinations available for 920th Rescue Wing Airmen during drill weekends. The influenza vaccine is mandatory for all military members.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although seasonal influenza viruses are detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses typically circulate during the fall and winter during what’s known as the flu season.

The exact timing and duration of flu seasons varies, but flu activity often begins to increase in October and typically peaks between December and February.

Influenza, commonly referred to as “the flu,” is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. Influenza occurs most often in the late fall, winter, and early spring, so peak occurrences are just around the corner.

Those who have a severe egg allergy, have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination or who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within six weeks of receiving an influenza vaccine should not get a flu vaccine without first consulting their physician.

The 920th ASTS is comprised of Airmen with a wide variety of medical Air Force Specialty Codes who train unit members to ensure combat readiness and provide physical exams, immunizations, and occupational safety support to 920th RQW Airmen.

The squadron’s Airmen provide medical support for the entire wing, ensuring oversight of individual health and medical readiness. The 920th ASTS deploys qualified personnel to provide personnel and equipment necessary for patient movement required worldwide.
