PETER CRANIS: Recently we received an economic impact report from Visit Florida on the numbers regarding tourism in Brevard County for 2022 (there is about a one year lag in collecting this data at the state and local level).

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –  Recently we received an economic impact report from Visit Florida on the numbers regarding tourism in Brevard County for 2022 (there is about a one year lag in collecting this data at the state and local level).

There were some very interesting datapoints in the report. First of all, Total Visitor Spending for the county was $2.34 billion, up from $1.78 billion the previous year.

The top items visitors spent on were:

■ Food & Beverage ($652 millon)
■ Lodging ($646 million)
■ Transportation ($481 million)
■ Shopping ($439 millon)
■ Entertainment & Recreation ($124 million)

Gross Domestic Product was $1.57 billion and jobs were 35,743 (direct, indirect and induced) with wages at $965 million. Total Business Spending was $2.9 billion and $239 million in local taxes were generated by the tourism industry.

The State of Florida also showed considerable growth in 2022 with Out-Of-State visitors approaching 155 million, a growth of 14% over 2021 and 5.7% ahead of the prepandemic 2019 year.

Visitor spending grew almost 19% to nearly $125 billion. Nearly $122 billion in GDP was generated, representing 9% of Florida’s Gross State Product. Florida employment in tourism grew to two million jobs and was the second largest employer in the state.

Taxes generated equaled $35 billion and Florida households would have to contribute an extra $1,840 per household in state and local taxes to maintain the level of tax receipts. Next up, we will have results from our own economic impact study for 2023.

We interviewed 2,500 visitors and will have some interesting data to share including spending per party, length of stay and party size.
