Melbourne Police have released an update on the Brightline train vs SUV crash that happened on Wednesday near W H Jackson Street and US-1.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police have released an update on the Brightline train vs SUV crash that happened on Wednesday near W H Jackson Street and US-1.

According to Melbourne Police Sgt. Benjamin Slover, the driver of the SUV, who was injured in the crash, has died.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. when Honda Element SUV was heading west on W H Jackson street and struck a northbound Brightline train traveling on the western most railway.

Police have identified the SUV driver killed in the crash as 62-year-old Charles Julian Phillips from Melbourne.

The vehicle involved in the crash had four people inside.

Police say it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash.

The passengers inside the SUV were Keisha Balingei Gonzalez, 48, of Melbourne; Terricha Culbreth, 44, of Palm Bay; and a 9-year-old child of Palm Bay.

The crash is still under investigation.
