BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –  Health First’s Viera Hospital has been awarded on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2024.

This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list was announced on October 25 and can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Proximity and access are of the utmost importance when choosing between top hospitals. The America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2024 ranking was created to identify the top hospitals at the state level.

Hospitals from all U.S. states were eligible for the ranking and included in the nationwide survey. The 25 states with the most hospitals according to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) were surveyed individually.

The remaining states were grouped into 4 regions: Northeast, Midwest, West, and South. Leading hospitals from these states were considered accordingly. Four data sources were used for the evaluation:

■ Nationwide online survey: Over 10,000 medical professionals (doctors, hospital managers and healthcare workers) were asked to recommend the best hospitals (in and out of state) based on their expertise.

■ Quality Metrics Data: Data from Medicare and Medicare Services available for Mortality, Safety, Readmission, Experience, Timely & Effective Care was considered.

■ Patient Experience: Cleanliness of the hospitals and quietness, communication of the nurses/doctors and staff responsiveness, care transition, medicine communication, and discharge information.

■ PROMS Implementation survey: To account for the increasing importance of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).

Opened in 2011, Viera Hospital is the newest of the four Health First hospitals and is a beacon of healthcare for a rapidly growing community – offering quality medical care inside its beautiful five-story, 84 bed, acute-care facility. Features include a 24-hour Emergency Department, all-private inpatient beds, all-private observation beds, full medical and surgical capabilities, diagnostic imaging services, and the VitalWatch® eICU.

“This Newsweek inclusion placing Viera Hospital among the best hospitals in the state of Florida is a tremendous honor for every one of our associates and volunteers, and certainly caps off what has been an incredibly impactful year,” said Viera Hospital Administrator Dustin Boring.

“Viera is a vibrant and rapidly growing community and, in fact, is one of the nation’s fastest growing destinations for individuals and families. This honor is reflective of Health First and Viera Hospital’s commitment to providing the best wellness and medical care for our residents and visitors.”

The Newsweek award caps an already-exceptional year for Viera Hospital. For the seventh straight grading term, Viera Hospital achieved a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of “A.”

This prestigious national distinction recognizes Health First’s and Viera’s commitment and achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital setting.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Leapfrog grades are updated twice annually, in the spring and fall, and are based on 22 evidence-based measures – including 12 Process Measures and 10 Outcome Measures.

Viera Hospital also earned a coveted 5 Star rating in this year’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Rating System report.

The annual CMS ratings are based on extensive data that measures critical outcomes, including patient experience, infection rates, readmissions, and mortality.

In the most recent report, Viera joined Cape Canaveral Hospital as two of only 11 hospitals in the state of Florida to earn the 5-Star rating .For context, there are more than 300 hospitals in the state of Florida.

CMS assigns star ratings to U.S. hospitals annually based on 46 hospital quality measures. These are divided into five quality categories: safety of care, mortality, patient experience, readmission rates and timely and effective care.
